..                   The Day the Lions Broke Free

The showers washed the land with hope--
Our eyes could almost see--
We traced salvation's envelope
The day the Lions broke free.

The sun beamed pure and fearless dawn
(Night shed to memory):
We were brass and iron pawns
The day the Lions broke free.

The sky glowed blue like childhood dreams
As every sky should be,
And every smile was as it seemed
The day the Lions broke free.

The streets were paved with promises--
A fruit for every need--
We mixed at wedding services
The day the Lions broke free.

Were we not dearly satisfied?
Could any of us flee?
We knew no better place to die
The day the Lions broke free.
